Thriving in the Gig Economy: Our Journey as a Husband-Wife Team

In today’s fast-paced world, the gig economy has become a lifeline for many seeking flexibility and the opportunity to pursue their passions. For my wife Cheri and me, it has been our path to balancing work and family life while building careers that we love.

Our Journey into the Gig Economy

Cheri began her journey in the gig economy in 2012, turning her passion for embroidery into a thriving business, Embroidery by Cheri. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a primary income source, with her Etsy shop becoming a go-to destination for custom embroidered items. You can check out her work here.

For me, the transition came through building Wynn Analytics, where I specialize in helping businesses leverage the power of Power BI. From consulting to building custom visuals, I’ve been able to turn my expertise into a successful gig that not only supports our family but also helps other businesses grow.

Juggling Gigs and Family Life

One of the biggest challenges we face is juggling our various gigs while raising three kids. It’s a constant balancing act—whether it’s meeting client deadlines, fulfilling custom orders, or simply making time for family. We’ve learned the importance of time management, setting boundaries, and most importantly, supporting each other in our respective ventures.

The Benefits and Challenges of the Gig Economy

Working in the gig economy has given us the freedom to craft our careers around our lives, rather than the other way around. We have the flexibility to attend school events, take time off when needed, and work on projects that genuinely excite us. However, it’s not without its challenges. Managing irregular income, finding new clients, and balancing work with family life requires constant vigilance and adaptability.

Lessons Learned and Tips for Success

Over the years, we’ve learned a few key lessons that have helped us succeed:

  • Start Small: Whether it’s setting up an Etsy shop or offering consulting services, start with manageable goals and scale as you grow.
  • Build a Strong Network: Networking is crucial in the gig economy. LinkedIn has been invaluable for me in connecting with potential clients, while social media has helped Cheri reach a broader audience for her Etsy shop.
  • Stay Organized: With multiple gigs and family responsibilities, staying organized is key. We rely on digital tools like project management apps and calendars to keep everything on track.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to navigate the gig economy, we’re excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. We hope to inspire others to explore this path and find the same fulfillment we have. If you’re thinking about diving into the gig economy, or if you’re already there and want to share your experiences, we’d love to connect!
